Let’s do “as if”

Fictions and representations in the practice of hatha yoga – Lorenzo Aristodemo

As if. How many times have we heard expressions like this in a yoga class? Linguistic fiction functions as an analogy for the representation that the yoga practitioner enacts on the mat. To paraphrase Pessoa who wrote, ‘The poet is a pretender. / He pretends so completely / that he ends up pretending that the pain / he really feels is pain,’ the yogi, through fiction, approaches a deeper listening to himself and the reality in which he is immersed. The practice reflects one’s relationship with the surrounding life; the mat becomes a privileged place of learning and awareness.

This is a hatha yoga practice, inspired by the approach of great European masters such as Van Lysebeth and Hahoutoff who have characterised and shaped the world of yoga teaching worldwide. A postural phrasing guided by the breath to achieve postural silence.

Born in 1983, Lorenzo Aristodemo was introduced to yoga in 2003 by Portuguese master Jaime Silva, and continued his studies with Giovanni La Salvia, a yoga pioneer in Calabria. He is carrying on that teaching tradition and founded Il Giardino di Shiva in the historic centre of Cosenza. After several training experiences in India, Lorenzo earned a diploma from the Mediterranean Yoga Federation, in the Van Lysebeth tradition. He has also attended various seminars with Patrick Tomatis and Claudio Conte in the Hahoutoff tradition. He follows the teachings of Wanda Vanni and is a teaching member of the Federazione Mediterranea Yoga.
